ChatGPT ads in India: what businesses should know before they spend

OpenAI now shows sponsored results below ChatGPT's answers in India. Here's who sees them, what they cost, who they suit and how to run a sensible first test.

ChatGPT now shows ads to people in India. OpenAI announced the India launch on 27 August 2026: sponsored results appear below ChatGPT's answers for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, and daily budgets start at ₹725.

So should your business be there? For most Bangalore and Chennai businesses the honest answer is: run a small, controlled test, but don't move money away from what already works. Below is what ChatGPT ads actually are, who they suit, what they cost and a 30-day plan to find out if they work for you.

What changed, and when

OpenAI started testing ads in ChatGPT in the US in February 2026 and has been adding countries since. India, which Business Today reports is ChatGPT's second-largest market with more than 100 million weekly users, was announced on 27 August. PPC Land dates the switch-on to 29 August, citing a LinkedIn post by OpenAI's VP of monetisation.

Over the same period the ad platform itself grew up quickly. According to PPC Land's timeline, cost-per-click bidding, a tracking pixel and a Conversions API arrived in May, conversion-optimised campaigns started rolling out in June, and advertisers gained the option to show ads only on the iOS app, Android app or web in August. In other words, this is no longer a brand-awareness experiment. It's being built as a performance channel, which is why it matters for anyone who buys leads.

How ChatGPT ads work

If you've run Google Search ads, some of this will feel familiar. Some of it won't.

  • Who sees them. Logged-in users on the Free plan and the ₹399-a-month Go plan. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users don't see ads, and neither do accounts that belong to, or are predicted to belong to, people under 18.
  • Where they appear. Below ChatGPT's answer, labelled as sponsored and visually separate from it. OpenAI says ads don't change what ChatGPT says.
  • How an ad is chosen. OpenAI's help centre says the system looks at the context and intent of the conversation, your landing page, your ad's title and copy, and optional "context hints" you provide. Hints describe topics; they are not exact-match keywords and don't guarantee a placement. Ads then compete in a relevance-weighted, second-price auction.
  • What you can see. Advertisers get aggregate numbers like impressions and clicks. They can't see anyone's chats, history, memories or personal details.
  • Where they won't run. Ads aren't shown next to sensitive topics such as health, mental health and politics.

The big shift for marketers is that you're not bidding on a search term. You're describing who you help and what problem you solve, and the system decides which conversations that fits. A clear landing page does a lot of the targeting for you.

On Google you buy the question. On ChatGPT you're judged on whether your offer fits the whole conversation.

What ChatGPT ads cost, and how to buy them

The minimum daily budget in India is ₹725, which both Business Today and PPC Land report from OpenAI's materials. That's low enough for a real test without a big commitment.

How you buy depends on what's open to your account when you sign up. At launch, OpenAI named WPP and Omnicom as its first Indian agency partners and said self-serve access to ChatGPT Ads Manager would open to Indian businesses on 4 September. PPC Land, writing on 30 August, reported that buying was still running through OpenAI's sales team and partners, with self-serve "coming soon". Check what's available in your own account before you plan around it.

There's no public rate card for India yet. Treat the first month's numbers as your own benchmark, not someone else's.

Who should test ChatGPT ads first

People use ChatGPT to think through decisions: comparing options, planning a purchase, working out what they need. That makes it a better fit for some businesses than others.

Good candidates:

  • B2B services and SaaS where buyers research before they talk to sales: IT services, HR tech, logistics, accounting software.
  • Education and upskilling: courses, coaching and certifications people compare carefully.
  • Considered consumer purchases: interiors, home renovation, travel, premium D2C products.
  • Local services with research-heavy buyers, such as wedding planners or event venues in Bengaluru.

Think twice if you're in:

  • Financial services or legal services. A summary of OpenAI's July 2026 policy update notes that legal services ads are prohibited, and financial services advertising outside the US is generally not allowed. Read the current policy before you plan anything.
  • Healthcare. Health ads face strict rules and won't appear in health or mental-health conversations.
  • Low-ticket impulse products where the decision takes seconds. Meta and Google Shopping usually do this better.

A 30-day ChatGPT ads test plan

Here's the plan we'd use for a Bangalore business spending its first rupee on ChatGPT ads.

  1. Pick one offer and one landing page. Choose your clearest, best-converting service. Make sure the page says plainly who it's for, what it costs (roughly) and what happens next. If the page is vague, fix it first: our guide to landing pages that convert is a good checklist.
  2. Write context hints from real questions. List the questions buyers ask your sales team. "Which CRM works for a 20-person sales team in India?" is a better hint than "CRM software".
  3. Install tracking before you launch. Add OpenAI's pixel to your site (and the Conversions API if your developer can set it up) so you can optimise for leads, not just clicks.
  4. Tag every ad link with UTMs so the traffic shows up clearly in Google Analytics, separate from free ChatGPT referrals.
  5. Start small and steady. Run a modest daily budget above the ₹725 minimum for at least two weeks before judging. Don't change everything in the first three days.
  6. Judge on lead quality, not clicks. At the end of the month, compare cost per qualified lead with your Google and Meta campaigns. Ask your sales team which leads were actually good.

Measure it properly

Measurement is where AI channels get messy. In October, LLM Pulse reported that ChatGPT referral sessions recorded in GA4 dropped about 46% between 9 and 11 October across the sites it monitors, around the time GPT-6 rolled out. The cause isn't confirmed: people may be clicking less, or visits may be losing their ChatGPT label and landing in "Direct".

Either way, the lesson for paid campaigns is simple: don't rely on default referral data. Use UTM tags on every ad, record conversions with the pixel, and keep a simple sheet that matches leads to sources. Also note that, per PPC Land, ChatGPT's view-through conversions use a one-day window and are reported separately from the main conversions number. Look at both, but make decisions on clicks that turned into enquiries.

ChatGPT ads vs Google and Meta ads

  • Google Search still captures people actively looking for a provider ("SEO agency in Bangalore"). It's the most predictable lead source for most service businesses.
  • Meta creates demand among people who weren't looking yet, with strong visual creative.
  • ChatGPT reaches people in the middle: still figuring out what they need, open to suggestions. It's newer, with less data and fewer controls.

That's why we'd fund a ChatGPT test from a small experimental budget rather than by cutting a campaign that's already working. If it earns its place, scale it then. If you'd like help structuring that kind of test across channels, that's what our performance marketing team does every day.

Don't forget the free spot above the ad

The ad sits below the answer. The answer itself is still earned. If ChatGPT already recommends your brand when someone asks for "the best interior designers in Whitefield", that's worth more than any ad slot. Paid and organic work best together: our guide on getting your brand recommended by ChatGPT covers the organic side, and our SEO and AEO services handle it for you.
