The creative testing system behind our best ads

Great targeting can't save a boring ad. Here's the simple, repeatable way we test creative so budget always flows to the winners.

On today's ad platforms, the algorithm does much of the targeting for you. That makes the creative (the image, video and words) the biggest lever you still control. The brands that grow are the ones that test creative systematically instead of guessing.

Start with angles, not designs

Most teams test small things: a different background colour, a new button. The bigger wins come from testing different angles, the core reason someone should care.

For a solar training course, angles might be: "earn more as a certified installer", "start your own solar business", "learn from engineers in 6 weeks", or "government-backed career". Each angle speaks to a different motivation.

Our four-step testing loop

  1. Brainstorm 4–6 angles from customer interviews, reviews and sales calls.
  2. Make one simple ad per angle, in the same format, so you're testing the message, not the production quality.
  3. Run them side by side with equal budget until each has enough results to compare fairly.
  4. Scale the winner and iterate: make new versions of the winning angle with different hooks, formats and visuals.

What to measure

Clicks are easy to get and easy to misread. We judge creative on what matters to the business:

  • Cost per lead or cost per purchase, not just click-through rate.
  • Lead quality: do these leads pick up the phone and buy?
  • Hook rate for video: how many people watch past the first three seconds?

The first three seconds decide everything

On Reels and Shorts, people decide almost instantly whether to keep watching. Strong hooks usually do one of these:

  • Call out the audience directly ("Bangalore salon owners, this is for you").
  • Show the result first, then explain how.
  • Ask a question the viewer is already asking themselves.
  • Show movement or a surprising visual immediately.

Refresh before fatigue sets in

Even winning ads wear out as the same people see them again and again. Watch for rising costs and falling click rates, and have the next round of creative ready before performance drops.

Keep a creative library

Record every test: the angle, the hook, the format and the result. Over a few months this becomes your most valuable marketing asset, a clear picture of what makes your customers act.

Don't ask "which ad looks best?" Ask "which message makes the right people act?" Then let the numbers answer.
